Gangs of Wasseypur Gangtok is a 1975 Indian film, directed by Mrinal Sen. It was India's first film to win the Filmfare Award for Best Film in Telugu. The film stars Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Raj Babbar and Supriya Pathak in pivotal roles. It is set in the city of Gangtok in Sikkim. The story revolves around a group of young people who are seen to suffer from unemployment and poverty in the city. They carry on with their lives until social unrest disrupts their peaceful existence. The eventual outcome of the unrest is depicted poignantly. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1975, the award for Best Feature Film in Telugu at 9th Avichi International Film Festival in 1977, and was screened at the Cannes Film Festival that year. The film was shot continuously over eighteen months all over Sikkim, including Gangtok, Rangpo, Yuksom and Lachung. The unit also travelled to Nainital and Delhi to shoot certain scenes. Since most of the cast were non-actors, some scenes required extra time for their preparation. It took nearly a year to find some actors for certain roles. In a press conference held in London after his visit to Gangtok, Mrinal Sen said the film was based on a true incident. Shashi Kapoor was to play a young man from a far-off village, but he asked for more money. He however finally agreed to play the role after being persuaded by Raj Babbar who played his father. The role of 'Tomar' was offered to Hema Malini but she refused the offer three times before agreeing, saying "I won't do a character that I may have been once." Better known as Supriya Pathak from Prasad's Shristi sold only 100 copies in her lifetime and became one of India's most successful lost films. The film was released on 14 September 1975. The film opened to good reviews. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama rated it with 4 out of 5 stars and wrote, ""Gangotok" remains one of the most compelling roles that Hema Malini has offered to date... But for all its philosophical undercurrents, "Gangotok" is a film that is all about the characters rather than any thought provoking or profound philosophy." Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN praised the psychological intensity, writing, "What makes Gangtok special is the way it forces us to address questions along the lines of morality and ethics. It is very much about how our actions have consequences. But it is also about getting to the root of our actions, not denying or shying away from them." Film critic Taran Adarsh rated it with 2.5 out of 5. He said, "First and foremost, I would like to say that Gangtok remains one of the most unsophisticated films in Mrinal Sen's entire directorial career as he has done nothing better as compared to this film. cfa1e77820
